Disturbance in Atlantic strengthening, could be tropical depression or ... - Mississippi Press (blog)

The National Hurricane Center is forecasting a strong tropical wave moving across the Atlantic Ocean to become a tropical depression or tropical storm later tonight or on Monday morning.

The latest advisory gives the disturbance a 70 percent chance of strengthening in the next 48 hours.

The system is located about 1,050 miles east-southeast of the Windward Islands and is moving west-northwest at 25 mph.

Satellite imagery indicates that shower and thunderstorm activity has increased since this afternoon and conditions are conducive for further development.

Tropical storm warnings are likely for portions of the Lesser Antilles. The system is expected to produce locally heavy rains and tropical storm force winds in squalls over portions of the Lesser Antilles Monday night or Tuesday.

An Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter is scheduled to fly into the system on Monday afternoon.
